Sri Lanka has restarted the printing of driver’s licenses after months of delays caused by a shortage of printing cards, the Department of Motor Traffic announced.
The printing process resumed last week, with the department now producing approximately 6,000 licenses per day. The shortage had created a significant backlog of nearly 350,000 pending licenses. With new stocks of printing cards now available, authorities say efforts are underway to clear the accumulated applications as quickly as possible.
Looking ahead, the Department aims to issue newly applied-for licenses within 14 days. To support this target, all district offices are being integrated into a centralized online system, several of which have already been connected.
In addition to the main printing facility in Werahera, license printing is currently carried out at district offices in Hambantota and Anuradhapura, with operations expected to begin soon in Kurunegala.
