The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) of Sri Lanka has announced the launch of a comprehensive economic census aimed at collecting detailed data on the country’s agricultural sector. The initiative will cover key areas including crop cultivation, livestock management, and aquaculture, providing a clearer picture of the island’s primary production activities.
Nearly 16,000 field officers will be deployed across all districts to carry out on-the-ground data collection, ensuring extensive coverage of rural and urban agricultural operations.
Officials said the data gathered will help policymakers, investors, and development agencies make informed decisions to support sustainable growth in Sri Lanka’s agriculture-based economy.
In addition, the DCS confirmed plans to launch a separate census of industrial and service establishments early next year, expanding its effort to build a comprehensive understanding of the country’s overall economic landscape.
