US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, met Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at the Sri Lankan Parliament to review ongoing bilateral cooperation in education and cultural exchange.
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, Ambassador Chung highlighted the progress of Peace Corps initiatives and other joint programmes that support educational development and cultural engagement between the two countries. She also underscored the importance of longstanding partnerships such as the Fulbright Program, the US government’s flagship international exchange initiative that enables students and scholars from over 160 countries to study, teach, conduct research, and contribute to global understanding.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya discussed Sri Lanka’s current education reforms, emphasizing the need for technical expertise across the Ministry of Education, the Department of Examinations, and the National Institute of Education. She noted that the country is working to transition from a heavily exam-driven system to one focused on formative assessments and collaborative learning. The Prime Minister also stressed the value of attracting emerging scholars whose skills align with Sri Lanka’s long-term human development goals.
