The 141st birth anniversary of Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara, widely honored as the Father of Free Education, was ceremonially celebrated on October 13, 2025, under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madhura Senevirathne, at the Mathugama Auditorium.
The main objective of this event was to appreciate the immense service rendered by Mr. Kannangara in introducing the Free Education System to the nation and to remind the public of the importance of continuing that policy forward.
Expressing his views at the occasion, Deputy Minister Dr. Madhura Senevirathne stated that it is his personal commitment to carry forward a process of modern educational reform, following in the footsteps of Mr. Kannangara.
He emphasized the introduction of practically oriented curricula, the integration of technology and innovation into education, the creation of a generation that meets global needs, the improvement of teacher training quality, and the establishment of equally facilitated schools ensuring equal opportunities for every child.
He further highlighted that the equality and quality of education envisioned by Mr. Kannangara must now be advanced into the 21st century, empowering students with knowledge and skills and that this should not be regarded merely as a personal commemoration, but as a policy framework connected to the entire system of free education.
At the event, awards were presented to students who won in the nationwide Kannangara Memorial Creative Competition organized by the Kannangara Commemoration Foundation.
