Sri Lanka’s GovPay Digital Platform Surpasses Rs. 1 Billion in Transactions, Onboards 200+ Government Institutions

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Digital Economy has announced a major milestone in the nation’s digital transformation efforts, as GovPay—the government’s unified digital payment platform—has surpassed Rs. 1 billion (approximately USD 3.3 million) in transactions and onboarded more than 200 government institutions across the country.

Launched in February 2025, GovPay was developed by LankaPay in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and under the supervision of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). The platform enables citizens to make secure digital payments to government entities, helping reduce paperwork, enhance efficiency, and improve service delivery nationwide.

Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne said the milestone underscores the government’s commitment to creating a “digitally empowered Sri Lanka,” adding that GovPay demonstrates how technology can simplify lives, enhance transparency, and strengthen public service delivery.

Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy and Chairperson of ICTA, noted that the achievement reflects “the growing trust of citizens and institutions in Sri Lanka’s digital transformation,” describing GovPay as a foundation for a transparent, efficient, and inclusive digital economy.

Channa de Silva, CEO of LankaPay, highlighted that GovPay has become the country’s fastest-growing national digital platform—expanding from just 16 institutions at its inception eight months ago to over 200 today. He emphasized that the initiative serves as a model for citizen adoption of digital payments in the public sector.

Currently, GovPay supports over 3,000 public services across ministries, departments, universities, hospitals, and local authorities, allowing citizens to pay directly via online and mobile banking or fintech platforms.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and ICTA said future integrations, including an Online Traffic Fine Payment System, will further expand GovPay’s reach, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s commitment to a transparent, citizen-centric, and innovative digital government.
