Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has announced that steps are being taken to reform Sri Lanka’s education system to reduce unnecessary academic pressures on students while nurturing responsible, compassionate citizens capable of contributing to a better world.
She made these remarks during the inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, held at the historic Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat. The event took place under the patronage of Prime Minister Amarasuriya and Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih.
In her address, Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that education should go beyond examinations and focus on developing well-rounded individuals.
Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, speaking at the same event, reminded students that “a person who is not law-abiding can never be a lawmaker,” urging them to contribute to building a society grounded in respect for the rule of law.
The session saw the appointment and oath-taking of the Speaker of the Student Parliament, followed by the swearing-in of Student Members of Parliament. After speeches by the Student Prime Minister and other Student Ministers, the session was adjourned, according to the Department of Communication of Parliament.
