Sri Lanka to Launch First Digital Identity Cards in 2026

Sri Lanka will issue its first digital identity cards in the third quarter of 2026, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced. He assured the public that personal data will be securely protected, despite concerns raised by some groups.

The President highlighted several initiatives underway to support the country’s shift toward a digital economy, including the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SLUDI) system, a national data exchange platform, upgrades to the Lanka Government Cloud, and the development of specialized software for a unified digital government services portal.

A nationwide awareness campaign on the Unique Digital Identity program will begin in early 2026.
