Sri Lanka to Introduce Controlled Prices for 350 Essential Medicines

Sri Lanka will soon enforce controlled prices on a wide range of pharmaceuticals, with an official gazette notification to be issued shortly, according to Minister of Health and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The minister announced that price caps will be applied to 350 types of medicines, covering both drugs already registered in the country and those that will be registered in the future. He emphasized that legal action will be taken against suppliers who fail to comply once the regulations take effect.

Dr. Jayatissa added that the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) will apply a new pricing formula to all future registrations, noting that within the coming months, nearly all medicines used in Sri Lanka are expected to fall under this regulated pricing framework.

“After issuing the gazette, we expect to inform the public of these prices, and we intend to enforce the law strictly against anyone who violates these regulations,” he said.

NMRA Chairman Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama confirmed that controlled prices have already been finalized for the 350 medicines and noted that additional categories of pharmaceuticals will be included in future rounds of price regulation.
