Sri Lanka to Grant Voting Rights and Pension Scheme for Citizens Working Abroad

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, announced that the government is taking steps to grant voting rights to Sri Lankans working overseas.

Speaking at an event marking the 40th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment on October 27, Minister Herath stated that the Ministry of Public Administration is collaborating in the process, with efforts underway to establish the necessary legal framework.

“A special committee has already been appointed by the Ministry of Public Administration to provide the required facilities and legal provisions to ensure voting rights for Sri Lankans abroad,” the Minister said.

He added that the government is also working to introduce a contributory pension system for all Sri Lankans living overseas, ensuring greater social protection for the country’s expatriate community.
