New syllabus to be implemented in 2021 for school in Sri Lanka Ministry of Education
The new timetable under the education reforms for Grade 1-6 starting next year will extend the school time from 7.30 am to 2 pm from the current 7.30 am to 1.30 pm schedule.
The classroom period will be also reorganised with 3 periods of 50 minutes each in the morning, before a 20-minute interval, following which there will be two more periods followed by a 10 minute break. This will be followed by two more periods before school closes at 2 pm.
The number of classroom periods will be reduced from 8 to 7 from 2026 for Grades 1-6.
Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said there will be discussions with the Transport Ministry and other relevant sectors to ensure that school children are given the necessary transport facilities with the introduction of the new school time table for primary schools.
The new school curriculum for Grade 1-6 will begin from 2026.
