The Annual School cricket matches between rival schools is a very popular event in Sri Lanka. Many of the annual `big’ matches are held in February – March and the most famous and awaited of these all is the annual Royal – Thomian cricket match. Big Matches form an important part of modern Sri Lankan culture with both school children and adults taking part in much of the activity that is part of the annual matches.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Education Ministry states that during big match parades students must ensure they safeguard the dignity of their respective schools. Education Ministry has issued a circular in this regard. Minister Dallas Allahaperuma informed this during a discussion held with all the National school principals, OBAs and prefects. Students must not inconvenience school girls, refrain from forcibly entering girl’s schools and should not display inappropriate placards. The police will take stern action against any student who behaves in an unruly manner.
The biggest, oldest and longest Big match is the Royal-Thomian ‘Battle of the Blues which started back in 1879. The Royal–Thomian is the most celebrated sports game in Sri Lankan sports circle and it is the second-longest uninterrupted cricket match series in the world. Older than ‘The Ashes’ it is only behind the annual fixture between St.Peter’s College, Adelaide and Prince Alfred College played since 1878.
The 141st Battle Of the Blues the Big Match cricket encounter between Royal College Colombo- RC and St. Thomas College will take place at the SSC ground on March 12,13,14.

The 115th Lovers’ Quarrrel the Big Match cricket encounter between Mahinda College Galle – MCG and Richmand College will take place at the Galle Stadium on March 22 & 23 .
The Richmond–Mahinda Cricket Encounter is an annual cricket big match played between the first XI cricket teams of Richmond College and Mahinda College in Galle, Sri Lanka. It is one of the longest cricket match series in Sri Lanka, having been played for 115 years. The match is also known as the “Lovers’ Quarrel” in public and it is played at the Galle International Stadium. Lovers’ Quarrel was begun in 1905.
