Prof. Sampath Amaratunge appointed as the Chairman of University Grant Commission UGC Sri Lanka by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today. He was the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He was elected as a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities United Kingdom as a member representing the constituency II.
Professor Amaratunge, BA (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, MA in Economics from the University of Colombo, MSc. in Economics of Rural Development from Saga National University and Ph.D. from Kogoshima National University in Japan, counts over 27 years’ service in the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. An authority in Rural Economic Development, Professor Amaratunge has won several awards including the prestigious Research Excellence Award (2002) of the Kyushu Society of Rural Economics, Japan. He has over 75 refereed publications to his credit, both locally and internationally.
Prof. Sampath Amaratunge has held a variety of leadership positions, He was the 25th Vice Chancellor appointed for the University of Sri Jayewardenepura without considering those appointed as Acting Vice Chancellors of the said university in the last 60 years. His two terms of Vice-Chancellorship has resulted in noteworthy changes for the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. USJP has expanded with three new faculties under his leadership: Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.
