One in Four Adults Over 25 Faces Lifetime Risk of Stroke, Experts Warn Ahead of World Stroke Day

Health authorities have warned that one in every four people over the age of 25 may experience a stroke during their lifetime, underscoring the urgent need for greater awareness and prevention.

Dr. Surangi Somaratna, Specialist Neurologist at Kalutara Teaching Hospital, noted that about 30% of stroke patients are between the ages of 20 and 60, highlighting that strokes are no longer confined to older adults.

Speaking at a media briefing ahead of World Stroke Day on October 29, Dr. Somaratna emphasized that hypertension is a major contributor, identified in nearly 50% of stroke cases.

She urged individuals with high blood pressure to take prescribed medication regularly and undergo timely medical checkups, while those without hypertension should remain vigilant and monitor their blood pressure as a preventive measure.

Health authorities stressed that awareness, early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices—including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol use—are crucial to reducing the global burden of stroke.
