According to the UGC, registration for external arts degrees temporarily suspended till introduce new course syllabus.
Sri Lanka University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to temporarily suspend new registrations for external degrees in the Arts stream. The decision was taken as the existing Arts Degree courses have not been updated for a long time and due to this reason graduated students are facing difficulties while searching for jobs.
UGC says that a new curriculum will be introduced for external degree courses in the future with a focus on current job market.
Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, says that steps have been taken to appoint an expert committee to study existing subjects and introduce new subjects under the External Degree in Arts.

This decision has been taken as the existing curricula related to the subject of Arts have not been updated for a long time and as a result many students are directed to study only a few subjects.
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has advised the administrators of the island’s universities to reorganize the tertiary education system to prepare the graduates to fit the labor market.
However, registration for other external degree courses, including management and science, conducted by Sri Lankan universities has not been suspended, he said.
