A Series of Victories for Students Who Participated in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO – 2025)

The Science and Mathematics Branches of the Division of Educational Quality Development, under the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, annually select students to participate in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO).

The 2025 competition was held in Malaysia from October 5 to October 9, 2025.

After conducting competitions at school, zonal, and provincial levels, students who won at the provincial level were selected for the national competition. From among those who obtained the highest marks at the national level, students were chosen for international participation. After providing them with formal training, 12 students from the Science Division and 12 students from the Mathematics Division took part in the international competition.

Among the 12 students who represented the Science Division, these four students, Himeth Kemsara Abeysinghe – Royal College, Colombo, D.M.M. Kavithma – Ananda College, Colombo, S.W. Savithri Sadamith Samarawickrama – Rahula College, Matara and N.B. Thenuk Winsith – Badulla Central College won Silver Medals, while the remaining eight participants secured Bronze Medals.

Among the 12 students who represented the Mathematics Division, seven won Bronze Medals.

Moreover, in the STEM Team Competition held as part of this Olympiad, the Sri Lankan team achieved fourth place among all participating countries.

Winning such a large number of medals at an international competition marks a significant and proud achievement for Sri Lanka.
