The Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Sri Lanka has installed 20 additional self-service check-in kiosks to improve efficiency and enhance the passenger experience.
The new installations bring the total number of kiosks to 28 and include a self-bag-drop facility, enabling travelers to complete the entire check-in process independently — from flight check-in and seat selection to printing boarding passes and bag tags. Passengers can then proceed directly to emigration and boarding after dropping off their luggage.
The upgrade comes as passenger traffic at BIA rose 16% in the first half of 2025, reaching five million travelers. Total annual traffic is projected to hit 14 million by 2027.
To further ease congestion, authorities have also extended the check-in window, allowing passengers to check in up to four hours before departure. The measures are part of ongoing efforts to streamline airport operations and provide a smoother travel experience for all passengers.
